“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with … ambition when infinite joy is offered to us. Like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory
This message is contrary to materialism- It is about the Lord’s Glory, and His ability (and promise) to provide for His people.
“Come, thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee…. dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.”
John 1:14
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Hebrews 12:26-29
And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, "YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN." 27 This [expression,] "Yet once more," denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; 29 for our God is a consuming fire.
This is what Christmas is actually about. This is our greatest desire. Let’s desire more.
