What should Biblical encouragement do?

True encouragement is not about making others feel better about themselves, but preparing them to know, obey, and enjoy more of God. -Piper

So what is Encouragement not?

Proverbs 26:28 A lying tongue hates it’s victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

Flattery Filter:
-Do I want them to think of me, or the Lord?
-Am I hoping to get something out of this?
-Do I encourage people that have nothing to offer me?

Matt 3:16-17 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
