“I’m not searching for any new truths. But I do desire some new experiences with the old truths.” Chuck Smith

“There are many who believe in the gifts and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, but they don’t have a strong emphasis on Biblical teaching, nor do they look to the Word to guide their experiences with the Holy Spirit. There are many who have a strong emphasis on teaching the Word of God, but they don’t share the view that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are available and valid today. In Calvary Chapel we find the teaching of the Word and an open heart to the work of the Holy Spirit. It is this balance that makes Calvary Chapel a uniquely blessed movement of God.” -Chuck Smith

Theme: It is both RIGHT and GOOD to seek deeper communion with the Holy Spirit.

Great Expectations:

• The Holy Spirit does not come according to our expectations.

• Our seeking is simply an expression of faith and dependency.

Should we seek the Holy Spirit at all?

· Ephesians 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit…

· 1 Corinthians 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. …1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual [gifts,] but especially that you may prophesy.

· Luke 11:13 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will [your] heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?"

Biblical evidence of the presence of the Holy Spirit: The presence of spiritual gifts for the edification of the Body and the glorification of God.

1 Corinthians 14:2, 12

For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God; for no one understands, but in [his] spirit he speaks mysteries. ... 12 So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual [gifts,] seek to abound for the edification of the church.

Biblical evidence of the presence of the Holy Spirit: Bold witness.

Biblical evidence of the presence of the Holy Spirit: Conviction of sin.

John 16:8

"And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;
