Slide: “There are many who believe in the gifts and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, but they don’t have a strong emphasis on Biblical teaching, nor do they look to the Word to guide their experiences with the Holy Spirit. There are many who have a strong emphasis on teaching the Word of God, but they don’t share the view that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are available and valid today. In Calvary Chapel we find the teaching of the Word and an open heart to the work of the Holy Spirit. It is this balance that makes Calvary Chapel a uniquely blessed movement of God.” Chuck Smith

Slide: What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit? (2nd blessing)

“Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a term used to describe a movement of the Spirit upon and/or within a believer usually, sometime after the person is saved. There is controversy surrounding this phenomenon as to whether it is legitimate or not. Some people believe that once a person is saved the Holy Spirit is in the person and there is no subsequent "baptism in the Holy Spirit." In other words, they maintain that this Baptism of the Spirit occurs at salvation. Others believe that it is possible for the Christian to experience an additional movement of the Holy Spirit some time after salvation. Generally speaking, it is the charismatic movement that supports the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.” (Source: Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry)

Slide: Are there different baptisms?

Water Baptism
Mark 1:8 "I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
“in water, by John”

Baptism into the Body
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
“in the body, by the Spirit”

Spirit Baptism
Acts 1:5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."
Acts 2:38 Peter [said] to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Slide: Are there different relationships with the Holy Spirit?

“With” us, to convict the world of sin
John 14:16 "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 [that is] the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, [but] you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
John 16:7-11

“In” us, as a seal, a mark of our salvation
Ephesians 1:13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation--having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of [God's own] possession, to the praise of His glory.
1 Corinthians 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?

“Upon” us, to empower us for ministry
Acts 1:8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth."
Acts 19:1-6

Slide: Where can we all agree?

· Every believer is sealed at salvation with the Holy Spirit. (Eph. 1:13)

· This doctrine should not create “classes” of Christians. (1 Cor. 12:13)

· We depend on the Holy Spirit for empowerment in ministry.

· The western church lacks power.

· Sin has grieved the Holy Spirit in many churches and in many people.

o Eph. 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.

· There is a close relationship between your faith and the release of the power of God through the Holy Spirit.

o Matt. 13:57-58

· Not all are exercising a spiritual gift(s)
