Power Over Passions

• As a Christian, what you feed (Spirit or flesh) will rule your life.

• We must learn to repent of “respectable” sins.

• Sex is not the ultimate solution, Spirit-empowered self-control is.

• Anything put before God is an idol, all idolatry is adultery in God’s eyes.

Theme: Through God’s covenant-keeping faithfulness (Hesed), the sure mercies of David are available to you and to me.

Holiness is a group project.

Galatians 6:1-2

Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; [each one] looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. 2 Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.

James 5:19-20

My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

Psalm 103:11-12

For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

Through God’s covenant-keeping faithfulness (Hesed), the sure mercies of David are available to you and to me.

Isaiah 55:2-3, 6-9

"Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And delight yourself in abundance. 3 "Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you, [According to] the faithful mercies shown to David. ... 6 Seek the LORD while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way And the unrighteous man his thoughts; And let him return to the LORD, And He will have compassion on him, And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon. 8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," declares the LORD. 9 "For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.

Acts 13:32-34, 38

"And we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers, 33 that God has fulfilled this [promise] to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, 'YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' 34 "[As for the fact] that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: 'I WILL GIVE YOU THE HOLY [and] SURE [blessings] OF DAVID.' ... 38 "Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you…

There is no “getting away with” sin.

Proverbs 28:13

He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes [them] will find compassion.

Psalm 32:3-5

When I kept silent [about my sin,] my body wasted away Through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was drained away [as] with the fever heat of summer. 5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"; And You forgave the guilt of my sin.

The fruits of repentance include love, mission, and worship!

Psalm 105:8

He has remembered His covenant forever, The word which He commanded to a thousand generations…

Lamentations 3:22-23

The LORD'S lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. 23 [They] are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
